At a Glance: What Moves the Tape
- Oil eases on an Iran pause: Brent is down about 1.3% to near $102.80 and WTI about 0.6% to $90.60 after Trump said the US will not strike Iran before the November 3 midterms. [TradingKey, 10/09; AP, 10/09]
- Futures higher, chips lead: Nasdaq 100 futures are up about 0.86%, S&P 500 futures 0.41% and Dow futures 0.14%, after Thursday’s 1.25% Nasdaq decline. [TradingKey, 10/09; Investrade, 10/09]
- Delta misses and cuts: adjusted EPS of $1.72 missed $1.75, and the 2026 EPS guide falls to $5.10–$5.60 from $6.50–$7.50 on a $6B fuel-cost increase. Shares are down about 4%. [Yahoo Finance, 10/09; Skift, 10/09]
- The AI revenue audit: OpenAI told investors its annualized revenue neared $50B at the end of September, about $20B below the figure reported in late September. The SOX fell 3.4% Thursday. [Financial Times via US News, 10/08; BigGo Finance, 10/08]
- Michigan sentiment at 10:00 AM: consensus 47.6 vs. 48.1 prior, the third straight decline expected, with year-ahead inflation expectations at 4.6% last month. [Admiral Markets, 10/09; FXStreet, 10/09]
1. Macro Pulse
Thursday’s close: AI takes the hit. The S&P 500 fell 0.47% to 7,765.36 and the Nasdaq Composite 1.25% to 27,193.34, the second straight decline after Tuesday’s records. The Dow added 51.77 points, or 0.1%, to 51,231.64, and the Russell 2000 edged up 0.03%. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 3.4%; Intel lost 5.3% to $107.08, Micron about 4.8% and Nvidia about 2.9%. [Yahoo Finance, 10/08; Investrade, 10/09; BigGo Finance, 10/08; MarketBeat, 10/08]
The trigger was OpenAI’s run rate. The Financial Times reported that OpenAI told investors annualized revenue was approaching $50B at the end of September, about $20B below the near-$70B figure reported weeks earlier. The gap reflects different counting: Anthropic includes sales through cloud partners, OpenAI does not. The same presentation showed run-rate growth of 77% and enterprise growth of 107% in the third quarter. [Financial Times via US News, 10/08; TechCrunch, 10/08; Yahoo Finance, 10/08]
Futures rebound. Nasdaq 100 futures are up about 0.86%, S&P 500 futures 0.41% and Dow futures 0.14%. Nvidia and AMD are up about 1.6%, Broadcom 1.5% and Intel 1.2%. Delta and the telecoms are the main drags. [TradingKey, 10/09]
Bonds: a solid 30-year sale, then oil did the work. The $22B 30-year auction stopped at 5.618%, 31bp above September’s 5.308%, in a sale described as solid. The 10-year closed near 5.23% and the 30-year near 5.61% as oil retreated on Trump’s comments. This morning the 10-year is near 5.25% and the 30-year near 5.62%. [Yahoo Finance, 10/08; Barchart, 10/08; AP, 10/09; Trading Economics, 10/09]
[ANALYSIS] The long end fell about 10bp from the week’s highs without any change in the Fed path; the only new input was a lower oil price. That is the cleanest evidence yet for the read our research has built all week: crude, not Treasury supply, is setting the long bond.
Overseas: broadly higher. The Hang Seng rose 1.6% to 24,152.44; the Nikkei was flat at 69,030.92 and Shanghai near 3,813. South Korea and Taiwan were closed for holidays. In Europe, the DAX is up about 0.7% to 1% near 25,040, the FTSE 100 about 0.9% near 10,539 and the CAC 40 about 0.6%. [AP, 10/09; Investrade, 10/09]
Oil, dollar, gold. Brent is near $102.80 and WTI near $90.60. Thursday’s spike came as Iran stepped up tanker attacks and Houthi militants fired missiles at Riyadh. The DXY is near 102, EUR/USD near 1.1210 and USD/JPY near 158.3. Gold is up about 1.3% to near $4,190, and Bitcoin near $82,500. 2. Economic Calendar
| Release / Event | Time (ET) | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| University of Michigan Sentiment (Oct, prelim) | 10:00 AM | Consensus 47.6 vs. 48.1 prior, a third straight monthly decline. Expectations index consensus 46.1 vs. 46.3. A weak print with oil near $100 points to demand slowing before the Fed’s next hike. |
| Michigan Inflation Expectations (prelim) | 10:00 AM | The number that matters most. Year-ahead expectations jumped to 4.6% in September; 5-year consensus is 3.5% vs. 3.4%. A further rise supports the year-end hike. |
| USDA WASDE | 12:00 PM | Secondary for equities; relevant to food inflation inputs. |
| Baker Hughes Rig Count | 1:00 PM | Secondary. A supply response to $90 WTI would show here first. |
| Fed: Susan Collins (Boston Fed) | 8:00 PM | After the close. Centrist lean; any view on a December hike lands in weekend positioning. |
| Monday: Columbus Day | All day | Bond market closed, stock market open. Thin liquidity into any weekend Iran headline. |
[ANALYSIS] With the minutes and Waller pointing to a hike by year-end but probably not in October, today’s inflation-expectations line is the only scheduled data that could move that timing. A year-ahead reading above 4.6% would argue that the oil shock is feeding into expectations, the outcome the Fed hiked in September to prevent. 4. Pre-Market Movers: Upside
5. Pre-Market Movers: Downside
6. Sector Rotation Radar
STRONG: Semiconductors (rebound)
Nvidia and AMD are up about 1.6%, Broadcom 1.5% and Intel 1.2% after Thursday’s 3.4% SOX decline, helped by lower yields and Lumentum’s sold-out-through-2029 comment. Durability: low until the OpenAI numbers are digested. The rebound is smaller than the drop, and a $20B gap in the largest AI customer’s run rate goes to the core of the capex story. [TradingKey, 10/09; BigGo Finance, 10/08]
WEAK: Telecom and Airlines
T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon are down 5% to 7% on SpaceX’s spectrum deal, and Delta is down about 4% on its fuel-driven guidance cut. Durability: telecom is strategic and likely lasting; airlines depend on whether the Iran pause holds crude down. [TradingKey, 10/09; CNBC, 10/09]
[ANALYSIS] Managed care is the sector to watch next week. The 2027 star ratings created clear winners and losers in one release, and the dispersion between Humana and smaller Medicare Advantage plans will shape guidance into third-quarter reports.
7. Today’s Session Playbook
- Michigan inflation expectations at 10:00 AM. Year-ahead expectations were 4.6% in September. A higher reading keeps the year-end hike firm even as oil eases; a lower one lets the rally in long bonds extend.
- Delta and Humana set the earnings tone. Watch whether Delta holds above its premarket low as crude falls, and whether Humana keeps a double-digit gain through the first hour.
- S&P 500 levels: futures imply an open near 7,795. Wednesday’s 7,801.77 close is the first resistance and Tuesday’s 7,818.93 record the second. Thursday’s 7,765.36 close is support.
- Event risk: the weekend and Iran. Trump’s pledge covers US strikes, not Iranian tanker attacks or Houthi missiles. With the bond market closed Monday for Columbus Day, any weekend escalation lands in a thin market.
- Under-the-radar: the AI revenue audit. The OpenAI figure revives the circular financing question we raised Thursday: Broadcom is reportedly arranging over $50B so OpenAI can buy its chips. Watch Broadcom versus Nvidia as the read on whether vendor financing is now a discount. [TIKR, 10/08]
Yesterday our research said the 30-year auction would confirm whether oil, not supply, sets the long bond. It did, from an unexpected direction. The $22B sale was solid at 5.618%, and the long end then fell with crude after Trump’s Iran comments, closing near 5.61% for the 30-year and 5.23% for the 10-year. Yields followed oil up on Wednesday and down on Thursday, with Treasury demand strong both days. Our thesis held; the S&P 500 support did not. It closed at 7,765.36, below the 7,774 level we named, and the cause was OpenAI’s revenue, not oil.
Our pre-market calls scored well where we committed. Haemonetics, our Opportunity, closed up 17.46%, more than double its premarket gain. Palantir, marked Wait for Open, closed up about 3%. Two Wait for Clarity calls proved right to wait: argenx recovered to a loss of 11.83% from about 16% premarket, and Micron fell about 4.8% with chips. Delta, our under-the-radar setup, confirmed this morning that $105 Brent reached fourth-quarter earnings. We could not confirm closing figures for PepsiCo, Wolfspeed, TSMC or the oil majors. [Yahoo Finance, 10/08]
Across the week, the delta rule has had a rate term and that rate term has been oil. The 30-year went from 5.67% Monday to a 5.72% high Wednesday and back to about 5.61%, tracking crude almost tick for tick. Thursday added a second audit. The market spent the summer asking whether AI spending had a visible return; it now asks whether the revenue at the top of the chain is what investors were told. The hypothesis for next week: if Trump’s pause holds oil near $100, the long bond eases and rate-sensitive groups get relief. Leadership will then depend on AI customers proving revenue, not on vendors proving orders. Investors, and we, should resist reading a one-day chip bounce as the answer.
