Bonds and the dollar. The 10-year fell 3bp Tuesday to 5.12% and the 30-year 6bp to 5.42%; the 2-year rose 2bp to 4.79%, flattening the 2s10s spread to about 33bp. This morning the 10-year is near 5.10% to 5.12%. The dollar index fell 0.26% Tuesday to 101.71; EUR/USD is near 1.1226 and USD/JPY near 158.07. Credit. The ICE BofA high-yield spread stood at 329bp in the latest reading, from 331bp; the investment-grade spread widened 2bp to 87bp. [CappNotes, 10/20]
Oil: a $112 high, then a reversal. December Brent touched $111.99 Tuesday and settled down 0.69% at $108.79. Expiring November WTI hit $110.48 and settled $101.79; December WTI closed at $98.28. Overnight Brent rose as much as 1.9% to about $110.85 on Hormuz tanker attacks, and our snapshots now range from $109 to $111. [CappNotes, 10/20; Grafa, 10/21; CNBC, 10/21; Investrade, 10/21; Yahoo Finance, 10/21]
[ANALYSIS] The reversal from $112 mattered more than the high. With Brent settling under $110 and housing weak, the 30-year fell 6bp, and the rate-sensitive sectors that lost Monday led Tuesday.
Overseas. Korea’s Kospi rebounded 3.29% to 5,735.67, recovering Tuesday’s loss; Samsung rose 5.67% and SK hynix 5.81% after Super Micro’s outlook eased AI spending fears. Japan’s Nikkei rose 0.85% to 64,621.24. Hong Kong and Shanghai fell. Germany’s DAX is up about 0.5%; the FTSE 100 is little changed. [Korea JoongAng Daily, 10/21; TradingKey, 10/21; Investrade, 10/21]
Gold, crypto, volatility. Gold is near $4,134 to $4,146 after closing Tuesday near $4,143. Bitcoin is up about 1.9% near $83,600. The VIX fell 6.13% Tuesday to 17.31 and is near 17.1. [CappNotes, 10/20; Yahoo Finance, 10/21; Investrade, 10/21]
2. Economic Calendar
| Release / Event | Time (ET) | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| MBA Mortgage Applications | 7:00 AM | After starts fell 5.2% and pending sales hit a record low, a third weak housing read reinforces the growth-fear bid for bonds. |
| EIA crude inventories | 10:30 AM | A draw with Brent near $110 and Hormuz attacks continuing would retest Tuesday’s $112 high. |
| $13B 20-year bond auction | 1:00 PM | The long end rallied 6bp Tuesday; a weak tail would test whether that bid is durable. |
| Meta, Tesla, IBM, Lam Research, Texas Instruments | After close | The AI audit reaches the spenders. Lam’s consensus is about $2.15 of EPS on $7.59B of revenue. Also: CSX, Kinder Morgan, Southwest, SAP, United Rentals. |
| Fed speakers | None | Blackout before the October 27–28 meeting. October hike odds were about 15% to 17% and December about 90% after Chair Warsh’s remarks last Friday. |
[ANALYSIS] With no Fed voice and no major data, the session belongs to oil inventories, the 20-year auction and the after-hours reports. Housing is now doing the Fed’s work: a record-low pending sales index pulls long yields down. [Investrade, 10/21; TheRightTrader, 10/2026; CappNotes, 10/20]
3. Earnings Spotlight
[ANALYSIS] Overnight reports split on one line. SpaceX, Super Micro, AT&T and Elevance raised and are higher. Netflix met and trimmed, United cut, and both are lower. Intuitive Surgical beat and fell on a narrowed outlook and price cuts.
4. Pre-Market Movers: Upside
5. Pre-Market Movers: Downside
6. Sector Rotation Radar
STRONG: AI Hardware and Space
Super Micro’s raised outlook lifts Dell, HPE and Korean memory; SpaceX’s guide lifts Rocket Lab, AST SpaceMobile and peers. Durability: moderate; Lam Research and Meta tonight decide whether the AI hardware bid holds, and the SpaceX unlock Thursday adds supply. [Investrade, 10/21; Yahoo Finance, 10/21; Korea JoongAng Daily, 10/21]
WEAK: Streaming, Airlines and Med Tech
Netflix, United and Intuitive Surgical fall on guidance, fuel and pricing. Durability: high for airlines while Brent holds near $110; moderate for the others, where the cuts are company-specific. [Investrade, 10/21; CoinCentral, 10/21]
[ANALYSIS] Tuesday’s leaders were health care, real estate, utilities and financials, the sectors Monday sold. When rate-sensitive groups lead and chips lag, the rally is finally running on lower long yields, not on one sector.
7. Today’s Session Playbook
- Data: EIA crude at 10:30 AM, 20-year auction at 1:00 PM. A crude draw pushes Brent back toward $112; a sloppy auction tests the 30-year’s 6bp rally.
- Top story: raise or get sold. SpaceX and Super Micro raised and rose; Netflix and United did not. Tonight Meta, Lam Research and Tesla face the same test.
- S&P 500 levels: futures imply an open near 7,735. Resistance is 7,744.06, then 7,765.36 and 7,801.77; support is 7,712.57, then 7,690.73.
- Event risk: Brent above $112. Tuesday’s reversal from $111.99 helped the bond. A close above that high would test the 10-year at 5.2% again.
- Under-the-radar: housing as the bond’s friend. Starts fell 5.2% and pending sales hit a record low. Weak housing pulls long yields down, which helps the rate-sensitive groups that led Tuesday.
Tuesday morning our research said that at $110 Brent equities pay two taxes, money and energy, and only raised numbers clear both. The test: Netflix and United must raise, not meet, and a 10-year above 5.2% on Brent above $111 would make Monday’s narrow chip rally the ceiling. Brent did break $111, touching $111.99, then reversed to settle at $108.79. The 10-year fell 3bp to 5.12%. The ceiling branch never came. Instead breadth arrived: the Russell 2000 rose 1.65% and advancers beat decliners almost three to one while chips fell.
The raise rule scored cleanly. Netflix met its revenue bar and trimmed the year: down about 6%. United cut its fourth-quarter guide: lower. SpaceX and Super Micro raised: up 8% and more than 10%. Our Tuesday calls: GM, a Wait for Clarity, closed down 6.84%, so waiting was right. Northrop, an Opportunity, closed up 4.57%; RTX, also an Opportunity, closed up only 0.64%, below its premarket gain. 3M, a Wait for Open, confirmed at +5.78%, and Equifax at +11.33%. CoreWeave, our Dead Cat Watch, rose 1.65%, wrong on the day. We could not confirm Tuesday closes for Halliburton, MSCI, Nvidia, Micron, Sandisk, Western Digital or Steel Dynamics. [CappNotes, 10/20]
The hypothesis now: the two taxes are not fixed. When Brent reverses under $110 and housing weakens, the long bond rallies and the money tax eases for the many, which is what Tuesday’s breadth showed. Single stocks still answer only to the raise rule. SpaceX adds a refinement for tonight: the market will pay for doubled capex if the revenue guide outruns it. That is the bar for Meta, which fell 8.5% in July on spending without visible return. If Meta and Lam raise, and Brent stays under $112, the breadth of Tuesday can extend into the AI leaders. If they only meet, money rotates further into the rate-sensitive groups. Investors, and we, should watch the revenue guide against the capex guide, not the EPS line.
