1. Macro Pulse
Tuesday’s close: chips led, breadth did not. The S&P 500 rose 0.60% to 7,722.60, the Nasdaq Composite 1.18% to 26,477.81, the Russell 2000 1.16% to 2,818.87 and the Dow 0.03% to 52,377.57. The chip index jumped 3.60% to 11,482.51. [CappNotes, 10/27; Investrade, 10/27]
Narrow again. The equal-weight S&P 500 rose only 0.11%. Technology gained 1.70%; energy fell 2.05%, staples 0.92% and real estate 0.84%. Advancers led decliners 1.83 to 1 on the NYSE, but Nasdaq new lows still beat new highs 239 to 62. [CappNotes, 10/27]
Futures this morning. S&P 500 futures are up about 0.14% near 7,768, Nasdaq 100 futures about 0.47% and Dow futures down about 0.25%. The Russell 2000 ETF is down 0.17%. [Investrade, 10/28; investingLive, 10/28; Current Logic, 10/28]
Bonds: the line is crossed. The 10-year closed Tuesday at 4.995%, its sixth rise in eight sessions, and traded near 5.0155% around 8:20 AM. The 2-year is near 4.758%, the 5-year 4.868% and the 30-year 5.313%. [CappNotes, 10/27; Investrade, 10/27; investingLive, 10/28]
Supply was not the problem. Tuesday’s $70B 5-year auction stopped at 4.845% with a 0.4bp tail, better than the 0.9bp six-auction average, and a 2.33 bid-to-cover. [Rallies.ai, 10/27; Helious, 10/27]
Oil: down on talks, back up today. December Brent settled down 1.67% Tuesday at $113.88 and WTI down 1.83% at $99.90 on Middle East peace talks. Brent was $114.88 at 6:47 AM; the next contract is near $111.40. WTI is near $101.60 to $102.10. [CappNotes, 10/27; Current Logic, 10/28; AP, 10/28; Investrade, 10/28]
Why it fell, and why it is sticky. Iran’s security council chief met the Supreme Leader after talks with Saudi, Turkish and Pakistani officials. Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia’s Ras Tanura refinery continue, and Gulf exports remain near 65% of pre-conflict levels. [Investrade, 10/27; CappNotes, 10/27]
[ANALYSIS] Brent fell almost 2% Tuesday and the 10-year still rose. That is a data move, not an oil move: the bond is pricing a stronger consumer and a December hike.
Overseas. Korea’s Kospi rose 6.6% to 6,012.44 as SK Hynix jumped 11.4% and Samsung about 9%. Japan’s Nikkei rose 1.1% to 63,954.19; Hong Kong’s Hang Seng 0.2% to 23,089.22. Europe is flat: DAX near unchanged, CAC 40 −0.1%, FTSE 100 −0.3%. [AP, 10/28; Al Jazeera, 10/28]
Gold, dollar, crypto, volatility. Gold is near $4,045 to $4,063, down about $12 to $15 after a 0.86% gain Tuesday. 2. Economic Calendar
| Release / Event | Time (ET) | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Consumer confidence (Oct), released Tuesday | 10:00 AM Tue | 91.7 vs 81.0 expected, the first rise in four months, on better views of jobs and business conditions. The reason the 10-year is back at 5%. |
| Advance goods trade balance (Sept), released | 8:30 AM | Deficit $134.9B vs $130.2B expected, up $2.8B. Imports rose $8.1B, mostly capital goods tied to AI investment. Trade is a drag on third-quarter GDP, due Thursday. |
| MBA mortgage applications | 7:00 AM | With the 10-year at 5%, mortgage rates have no relief to offer a housing market at multi-decade lows. |
| Bank of Canada decision | 9:45 AM | Moves the Canadian dollar, about 9% of the dollar index. |
| EIA crude inventories | 10:30 AM | A draw with Gulf exports near 65% of normal would support Brent near $115. |
| FOMC decision; Warsh press conference | 2:00 PM; 2:30 PM | Hold at 3.75–4.00% expected by 94 of 100 economists polled by Reuters. No new projections; Rabobank expects Hammack, Kashkari and Logan to dissent for a hike. |
| Earnings after the close | After 4:00 PM | Microsoft, Alphabet, ServiceNow, KLA, Chipotle, Ford, eBay and Carvana. Amazon reports Thursday. |
[ANALYSIS] With no new dot plot, the decision is the statement, the dissents and Warsh’s December language. Three hawkish dissents would read as a December hike already decided. [Newsquawk, 10/28; Investing.com via Reuters, 10/28; ActionForex, 10/28]
3. Earnings Spotlight
[ANALYSIS] Biogen also beat, with EPS of $2.62 vs $1.99 and revenue of $2.8B vs $2.63B; our sources did not show its premarket move. [Investrade, 10/28]
4. Pre-Market Movers: Upside
5. Pre-Market Movers: Downside
6. Sector Rotation Radar
STRONG: Semiconductors and Memory
The chip index rose 3.60% Tuesday on Anthropic supply deals, Kospi 6.6% overnight on SK Hynix, and the tech ETF is up 0.61% premarket. Durability: tied to tonight; Microsoft and Alphabet capex guidance is the demand that pays these suppliers. [CappNotes, 10/27; AP, 10/28; Current Logic, 10/28]
WEAK: Energy and Rate-Sensitive Growth
Energy fell 2.05% Tuesday as Brent dropped on peace talks; Valero fell 9.24% and Delek and Par Pacific about 10%. Solar is down hard this morning on Enphase. Durability: refiners depend on talks; solar depends on the 10-year. [CappNotes, 10/27; Current Logic, 10/28]
[ANALYSIS] The equal-weight index rose 0.11% while the chip index rose 3.60%. The market is paying a handful of AI suppliers and taxing anything financed at 5%.
7. Today’s Session Playbook
- Data: the Fed at 2:00 PM, Warsh at 2:30 PM. A hold is priced. Watch for hawkish dissents and December language; either keeps the 10-year above 5% into Microsoft and Alphabet.
- Top story: the AI supply chain. SK Hynix, Vertiv and Seagate show supplier revenue at records. Tonight Microsoft and Alphabet must show their own revenue outrunning capex.
- S&P 500 levels: futures imply an open near 7,733. Support is 7,722.60, Tuesday’s close, then 7,676.77; resistance is 7,757.17, then the 7,818.93 record.
- Event risk: the 10-year at 5% with Brent near $115. Gulf exports are near 65% of normal and Houthi attacks continue, so the peace-talk discount in oil can reverse in a headline.
- Under-the-radar: KLA tonight. Ultra Clean’s raise points to strong tool demand. A KLA raise would confirm chip capex is still rising behind memory’s profits.
Monday our research set a bond test: strong data and oil would put the 10-year over 5%. Tuesday sent half of it. Consumer confidence printed 91.7 against 81.0, but Brent fell 1.67% on peace talks. The 10-year still closed at 4.995% and is near 5.0% this morning. The strong-data branch fired without oil, so the bond is now pricing the economy and a December hike. Tuesday also extended our equity thesis: AMD rose 5.45% on an Anthropic commitment it is helping to fund, so the circular-financing thread grew.
Our Tuesday calls: UPS, our Momentum Play, rose 5.75%, and Royal Caribbean, Momentum Play, 5.46%, our two best calls. Boeing, Wait for Open, fell 10.69% to a 52-week low on a 2029 cash target; waiting was right. Coca-Cola, Wait for Open, fell 1.64%; waiting was right. PayPal, Wait for Clarity, rose 2.00%: too cautious. The chipmakers, Wait for Open, rose with the index: Broadcom 4.00%, Micron 2.77%, Nvidia 0.90%; waiting cost upside. HSBC, Wait for Clarity, fell 5.70%. The S&P 500 held our 7,676.77 support and closed at 7,722.60, short of 7,757.17 resistance. We could not confirm Tuesday closes for Meta, Cadence, Whirlpool, JetBlue, MidCap, Corning, Smithfield, American Tower or Hilton, so the Meta test against $625 is unscored. [CappNotes, 10/27; Investrade, 10/27; Malay Mail, 10/28]
The hypothesis now: at a 5% 10-year, the raise rule has a sharper rate term. Vertiv, SK Hynix and GE Vernova show revenue arriving now and are paid. Visa, NXP and F5 beat but guide lower, and are sold. Enphase shows what 5% does to a financed product. The test is tonight. If Warsh leaves December open and Microsoft and Alphabet show cloud revenue outrunning capex, the chip rally can broaden. If Warsh confirms a hike and either company signals heavier spending without matching revenue, the narrow rally loses its anchor. Investors, and we, should watch the 10-year against 5% after 2:30 PM.
